detail from a rare historic map of New EnglandThis section provides annotated references for cartobliographic resources that are cited in the map descriptions and/or valuable for one interested in historical maps and the early mapping of New England.

Because of their specialized nature, relatively limited print runs, and high production costs, many of these works are rather expensive, with some running to several hundreds of dollars. For the new collector interested in antique maps of New England a good start would be Schwartz and Ehrenberg’s The Mapping of America, McCorkle’s New England in Early Printed Maps, and Manasek’s Collecting Old Maps. For well under $500, the three would provide a comprehensive overview (Schwartz and Ehrenberg), a detailed reference (McCorkle), and some valuable insights on collecting (Manasek).
